Artist's Description

John "Telly" Telfair was an illustrator for the Selective Service System with whom I worked and became close friends in the 1980s. He was black and grew up in Washington, DC. I was a pasty hick from the sticks of Illinois. This is my photoshop rendition of one of two illustrations he made for me as he was explaining what life was like for him in the 1940s in Washington. Life was different for him than for me; life was different then from what it is now; his illustrations provide a unique window into his life and times. I have done better in life because of his friendship. I miss him.
